BIOGRAPHY
Fanchon Stinger is a FOX 2 News anchor and reporter. She co-anchors FOX 2 News Morning weekdays with Alan Lee, along with daily reporting duties. Stinger is also an investigative reporter in the FOX 2 Problem Solver unit and the editor of “FOX 2 Honor Roll,” a special news feature that profiles outstanding young people in the Metropolitan Detroit area. She joined the WJBK FOX 2 News team as a reporter in August of 1997.
Fanchon Stinger has received numerous awards and recognition for her professional work while at FOX 2. She has won six Emmy awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences: 2004 Best News Feature-Hard for her “Diabolical Dentist” investigation; 2003 Best Cultural Feature Emmy for her “Dismantling Detroit” investigation; 2002 Best Reporter Talent Emmy; 2001 Target Audience Emmy for her investigative report on teens’ use of the inhalant, nitrous oxide; Best Anchor in 2000; and the Cultural Feature Emmy in 1998 for “The Million Mom March.” The Associated Press-Michigan named Stinger Best Reporter in 2000. She also was the Society of Professional Journalists finalist for Young Journalist of the Year 2002; Best Spot News Reporting for her coverage of the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City; and Best General Reporting for her investigative report busting a fake doctor. The United States Department of Health and Human Services awarded Stinger its highest honor, the Inspector General’s Integrity Award. The Muscular Dystrophy Association, the National Association of Black Journalists, Michigan Humane Society, the Martin Luther King Association and the Easter Seal Society also have honored her over the years.
When she is away from her reporting duties, Stinger maintains strong ties to the community and a deep commitment to enrich of the lives of young people through motivational speaking and seminars, and her involvement with the following organizations: Ronald McDonald House, National SIDS Alliance, Michigan Engineering Society, Thomara Latimer Cancer Foundation, “Prom Gala” Substance Abuse Prevention Program, Detroit Urban League, Vista Maria, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Detroit Public Schools and various other school districts, Think Detroit, the Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs, Children’s Hospital, Angela Hospice, and the NAACP, just to name a few. The Christian Children’s Fund, the United Way, the United Negro College Fund and Gospel Films are some of the public service causes she supports on a personal level.
Born and raised in Detroit, Stinger came to FOX 2 from WNEM in Saginaw, where she was a news anchor/reporter and morning show host for four years.
Before graduating from the University of Michigan, Stinger interned at FOX 2 in 1992. She graduated from U-M with honors in 1993, completing a dual Bachelor’s degree in English and communications.
Fanchon Stinger is married and lives in suburban Detroit. When she is away from her anchoring and reporting duties, she enjoys motivational speaking, traveling, reading, sports and exercising. #
